The historic cobbled streets of Edinburgh are a heaven for book lovers. The literary city is not only home to famous authors and a fantastic book festival but beautiful books shops too. From a design-driven contemporary store to cluttered caves of second-hand tomes – these are our favourite bookshops in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Books, Westport
Possibly one of the most well-known second hand bookstores in Edinburgh, Edinburgh Books is an Aladdin’s cave of written word, which has been around for more than 20 years. I love browsing the Scottish room, in particular, as well as discovering all the antiquarian bound books that line the walls from floor to ceiling. The charmingly cluttered store even has its own mascot – Clarence the water buffalo. Don’t forget to check out the stuffed rooms hidden in the basement before you leave.

Armchair Books, Westport
Nearby Armchair Books is another rabbit’s warren of a bookstore with many beautiful bound books and first editions. The higgledy-piggledy nature of the shelving, curled carpet and slightly musty smell only adds to the charm (in my opinion!) With an enviable view of the castle and the aroma of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties (the shop assistant was tucking into their lunch on my visit) you couldn’t get a more classic Edinburgh experience.

Golden Hare Books, Stockbridge
Like a breath of fresh air, Golden Hare Books is a bright, fantastically designed stockist of new books in trendy Stockbridge. Owned by a designer the store has a gallery-esque feel, which showcases brilliantly the handpicked selection of classic and contemporary books. The children’s picture books are especially beautiful so it’s a great place to bring little bookworms or come solo to buy them a gift.

The Old Town Bookshop, Victoria Street
The Old Town Bookshop is situated on one of my favourite streets in Edinburgh amongst independent boutiques, cheese and whisky specialists and historic buildings. Established in 1978 The Old Town Bookshop is a specialist in antiquarian books as well as a stockist of maps, prints and Scottish literature including works on art, architecture, history and travel. Random fact: the shop is run by 2 men who both happen to be named Ron Wilson.
